Some of us grew up with families that were difficult. We didn’t feel like we could be ourselves. We didn’t feel noticed, heard, or accepted. It was very hard and we really want to find a different way for our own life and families.

Sometimes people call them dysfunctional or toxic. Maybe those labels fit for you or maybe they don’t.

Was it crazy making growing up in your family?

Would you like to have different family dynamics than what you grew up with?

Do you struggle with feeling good enough?

Is your family still getting in the way of your life or did you have to separate yourself from them?

Maybe you grew up in a family that was very chaotic or maybe they didn’t talk about feelings and swept it under the rug. Either way you are tired of having difficulties in your relationships whether that is with your partner, family, friends, or career. You know that you would like to be able to say no and set boundaries or be able to connect on a deeper level, but you just haven’t figured it out.

You’ve tried a lot of things, but people around you just don’t get it.

They don’t understand how hard it is to live life without having a road map. Where the road map you saw your family have is not one you want to repeat.

At Relationships Matter Austin, we understand what it is like to grow up in families like this. We know that it can feeling isolating- feeling different- than those around you who had it a lot better growing up. They were given skills and tools. They had people to watch that knew about healthy ways of navigating the world.

We can help you have more understanding about how the patterns developed in childhood effect you today and how you can do it differently.

We come by our ways of relating in the world honestly. We develop them for our survival so we could get through some really hard times. But as we get older they can sometimes get in the way of us thriving.

But it doesn’t have to stay this way. You can have more calm, peace, and ease in your relationships. It really is possible!

Talking with a therapist allows you to express your feelings about what happened in a safe environment that’s entirely focused on helping you.

You can learn and practice the skills no one taught you when you were a child. These might include communications skills, independence, empathetic listening, and skills that make it possible for you to handle problems directly.

You can learn to be more comfortable in your skin, with your mind, body, and emotions, and with your own choices. You can grow more self-confident, self-accepting, and more self-assured. You can learn to feel more trust and safety in your life.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” -Maya Angelou
